An extremely rare Mdina Glass free blown bottle vase in elongated teardrop form, with a zigzag pattern of applied glass, a button rim and polished pontil. The base signed by Michael Harris. For further information and reference please see Michael Hill's excellent book'Michael Harris'. On page 44 he refers to these very early bottle vases and if you look closely at the Mdina stock photographs c1970 (pages 24 & 25), you can see similar examples. Dimensions: 42cm (16.5 inch) Tall X 9.5cm (3.5 inch) Maximum Diametre.
Condition: Close examination reveals some very light ware and a narrow band of scratches around the neck about half an inch below the rim (picture 11). They appear to be tooling marks from the making, which is consistent with the glass maker drawing the neck out (as described by Mark in the first paragraph on page 44). Otherwise excellent - no chips, cracks, staining or repairs. There is the expected ware to the base and the normal air bubbles, variations etc associated with free blown glass. Signed to the base'Michael Harris Mdina Glass Malta'.
