LOETZ RED IRIDIZED ART GLASS STERLING SILVER OVERLAY ART NOUVEAU CABINET VASE. This is a very special little piece. An elegant, beautiful little cabinet vase made in a blown red or cranberry colored glass and decorated with elaborate Art Nouveau style sterling silver overlay decoration. All four sides of the vase are pictured so you can see how elaborate the sterling decoration is.
This is not sterling deposit but rather raised high-quality hand applied and hand chased sterling silver overlay. There is a panel of sterling silver on the front side of the vase for a monogram but this one has not been monogrammed. The exterior surface of the glass is finished with a Tiffany-like iridized finish that gives the glass a matte appearance. This piece has been in my personal collection since 1998. Please Note: The faint spots you may see in the photos are from my camera and are not on the glass or the silver. The sterling silver overlay is signed STERLING near the base and has a single makers mark that I believe is the intertwined letters L and F for the La Pierre Manufacturing Company formerly of New York and New Jersey. This mark is pictured on page 108 of the book Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers: Third Edition Revised by Dorothy T. According to this book the intertwined letters L and F here represent the conventional pound sterling mark. I have always attributed the glass vase itself to Loetz; but this is only my opinion based on years of collecting.
I do not own any Loetz books, so I can offer no reference to substantiate my belief. Regardless, this is a fine high-quality example and gorgeous as you can see from the photos! I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. This piece dates to circa 1900. It is in near pristine original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. There no chips, flea bites, cracks, scratches, hairlines or repairs to the glass. I see no loss to the sterling silver overlay and no place where the silver is loose; only a bit of tarnish. There are only some very light signs of use or wear to the silver that are consistent with a piece of this age. I see no obvious cloudiness to the interior of the vase.
There are two minor factory or manufacturing flaws to the glass, a small elongated bubble (not open) inside the neck and a very small raised area near the shoulder see the last two photos. Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo. About 2.625 (6.7 cm) in diameter and sits about 2.75 (7 cm) off the table.
About 5.25 ounces (150 grams). On heavier items I will also offer a less expensive option, if available.
