A rare mid 19th Century opal glass vase by the celebrated factory of George Bacchus. It is of classical amphora form with circular foot and everted rim. The vase features an Etruscan scene which is repeated to both sides and in between are a winged figure and a lady holding a rabbit or perhaps a hare. The vase is a Vitrified Enamel Colours example and it has the Bacchus mark in a banner to the underside base. The glass shows fiery opal colours when held up to the light.
It also has gilt rings around the rim, shoulders and foot. A similar but slighter larger example can be found in the Victoria and Albert museum collection. Very good order for period with no damage. Gilt also very good with little wear. Small portion of one scene rubbed or perhaps missed during production, this is a small section that cuts through the parasol handle and ribbon being held by the lady. A couple of minor surface flaws from production. Height 30 cms (11.75 inches) Width 12.5 cms (5 inches) across body?Weight 892 grams (before packing) Stock Code: 7863 OC12-2.
