Rare Maltese Studio Art Glass Vase Red Trailing Swirls Amber Large 41cm. Vintage 1970s Mdina Glass Maltese Hand-Blown Art Glass Vase with Bold Red Trailed Decoration on Smoky Amber Ground. This stunning vintage studio art glass vase is a classic example of Maltese glassmaking from the renowned Mdina Glass studio, dating to the 1970s or early 1980s. Founded in 1968 by British glass artist Michael Harris (formerly of Isle of Wight Glass fame), Mdina Glass became famous for its organic, freeform designs featuring earthy colors, intentional air bubbles (known as "seeds"), and dramatic applied glass trails-exactly what you see here. Shape & Size: Elegant long-necked bulbous form (often called a "bottle" or "genie" vase in collector terms), perfect for display as a single-stem flower vase or standalone sculpture.

Tall, slender neck flares gently at the rim, swelling into a rounded body with a stable base. Color & Decoration: Beautiful smoky amber/tea-colored base glass that shifts to purplish tones in different lighting, overlaid with bold, freeform red (cranberry-to-blood red) glass trails.

These thick, irregular "scribble" or "drip" trails swirl organically down the neck and body- a signature Mdina technique for that handmade, artistic feel. Handmade Details: Full of character with numerous trapped air bubbles, slight thickness variations, and a rough pontil mark on the base (where the blowing rod was attached). No mold seams-pure free-blown art glass. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs.

Light surface wear/scratches consistent with age and gentle display use. The glass remains glossy and vibrant. Many early Mdina pieces like this are unsigned (paper labels often lost over time), but the style-smoky earthtone ground, red trailing, bubbles, and rough pontil-matches classic Mdina "trailed" or "random strapped" series from the Harris-influenced era.

Similar vases appear in collector guides e. Com and sell strongly among mid-century modern and studio glass enthusiasts. It's not mass-produced factory glass; this is true artisan work from Malta's golden period of studio glass! Perfect for Mid-Century Modern decor, art glass collections, or as a unique gift. Displays beautifully with natural light highlighting the color shift and bubbles-imagine it with dried grasses or a bold flower stem.
