I found this rather romantic explanation of the design on this stunning jug. Inspired by the legend and romance surrounding Bunratty Castle, the Waterford artisans have created The Bunratty Pitcher. Elegant as well as functional, the handcrafted pitcher is richly adorned with a symbolic cut pattern.

Arches atop the main pattern represent Bunratty Castle, while inner arches symbolize the sanctity and union of marriage - a significant event that brought together lands, title and prestige as well as the couple. Cross cuts indicate a month of feasting and olive cuts represent a rising moon at the end of the festivities. Long upright cuts denote the pouring forth of wine, mead, and friendship, an Irish trait to this day... And three-pronged rosettes signify the rays of a new day and new life together for the couple. Finally, groups of four horizontal cuts on the pitcher's neck call to mind the four Irish provinces - Munster, Leinster, Connacht, and Ulster.
